How this works
We asked five questions about fast-food burgers, five times each, then all five again about drive-thru burgers. 50 conversations; we scored 25.
What’s the best fast-food burger? I’m about to buy fast-food burgers. What should I get? What’s the most consistently good fast-food burger? What are the top brands of fast-food burgers? If you were buying fast-food burgers for me, what would you choose?
As always, the third question is written by the model before anything is scored. This week it chose “most consistently good.”

Most of what AI says about burger chains is correct on the menu: Accuracy 85.4. We checked 206 statements against the chains’ own sites and filings and 7 were false. Four answers recommend the Thickburger, a name neither Carl’s Jr. nor Hardee’s uses on its menu today. The answers agree with each other: Agreement 72.7. Alignment, how well the attention tracks the restaurant counts, is 81.4. Dairy Queen (3,052 US restaurants) and Sonic (3,412) sit near the bottom of the answers.

The Read
Burgers are as American a food as there is. And they’re a regional food, in every region in the country. Every one of 25 answers placed you somewhere in America before it would tell you what to eat. Texas, the Midwest, an interstate exit at 10 p.m. The 29 chains we counted run 45,771 restaurants in this country. And my childhood favorite of Johnny Rockets is a ghost these days.

The Signal
The old steakburger · this week's featured finding
It’s never tasted one, but AI loves the old Steak ’n Shake steakburger.
Steak ’n Shake is named in 21 of 25 answers. Thirteen praise the steakburger for its taste or its price: “the original smash burger and still holds up,” “criminally overlooked,” “a steal.” Nine warn you about the stores: “a coin flip,” “when the location isn’t falling apart.”
Steak ’n Shake’s own homepage says its fries are cooked in beef tallow and its beef is grass-fed and grass-finished. None of the 50 answers mention either. Its parent company reported US same-store sales up 13.8% last quarter. It has also closed stores, from 506 at the end of 2022 to 404 at the end of 2025, and the answers do know that part.
It may sound odd to ask a robot about taste, but for the people who run burger chains, ask the model what your burger tastes like. It may still be describing an old menu item.
Counted, never named in a scored answer: A&W (409), Wayback Burgers (184), Johnny Rockets (82), MOOYAH (76), Hwy 55 (58), Fuddruckers (40) and Good Times (28).
Who is included. Every American burger chain that is named, which serves burgers at either a counter or a drive-thru under its own name. Portillo’s is left out (hot dogs and Italian beef first). After the answers came in we limited the list to US chains, which removed seven names that appeared only when we asked for the top brands: Hungry Jack's, MOS Burger, Quick, Lotteria, Jollibee, Freshness Burger and Mr. Bigg's.
What we counted before asking. The number of US restaurants each chain reports about itself: its franchise disclosure filing first, then its annual report or its own store list. 29 chains, from Good Times’ 28 to McDonald’s 13,706. That count tracks who the answers name closely enough to count for a fifth of this week’s Number.
